Your Crate, Your Choice: Sustainable Packaging Options
We're committed to not only providing you with the freshest produce but also doing so in a way that respects our planet. That's why we offer flexible packaging options, giving you control over how your produce arrives.
Our Mission: Remove, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Our commitment to sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. We think long-term, balancing the crucial issues of climate change, food waste, marine and land pollution.
- Home Compostable Packaging: Our fruit and vegetable packaging is now paper or home compostable, wherever packaging is needed at all. This means less plastic in landfills and oceans.
- Closed-Loop System: Because we handle our own deliveries and value repeat business from environmentally conscious customers, we're uniquely positioned to collect our packaging for reuse, recycling, or composting, creating a true closed-loop system here in our precious Ontario.
Understanding Home Compostable Packaging
"Home compostable" might be a new term for you, but it's a big step forward!
These super sustainable materials often look and feel like conventional plastic. However, they are fundamentally different. Once disposed of, they properly biodegrade within one year, breaking down into carbon dioxide, water vapor, and organic matter, just like a plant decomposing. Crucially, they do this even in low temperatures, making them suitable for your home compost heap. This means no microplastics, just natural breakdown. click the link below to see an awesome video exactly about that.
The big question - Why can't everything arrive Loose?
While we prioritize sending as much produce loose as possible, some packaging is a necessary evil to prevent food waste.
- Preserving Freshness: Moist, leafy vegetables like lettuce and spinach wilt quickly without protection. Potatoes can turn green if exposed to light.
- Preventing Damage: Loose root vegetables can roll around and damage other produce or the delivery box.
We always balance the environmental impact of packaging against the even greater impact of food waste. We work hard to use only what's necessary to preserve the quality and extend the shelf life of your fresh produce.
Our Reusable Boxes & Collection Program
Our commitment to sustainability extends to our iconic delivery boxes and beyond.
- Reusable Crates: They're designed to be reused up to 100 times! If all our customers in Ontario returned their crates, it would save an incredible amount of virgin material every year.
- Easy Returns: Because we deliver ourselves, it's easy for you to help us complete the loop. Simply leave out your empty crate and any individual home compostable packaging that you can't compost at home. We'll collect it and bring it back to our compost to either recycle or compost. If it's compostable, we'll even use it to help grow more delicious vegetables! With our AMAZING friends at McVean Community Farm in Brampton.
The Problem with Plastic & Our Solution
Plastic has offered many conveniences due to its strength and flexibility, often with a lower carbon footprint in production than paper. However, the staggering amounts of plastic ending up in our oceans and landfills are undeniable.
We've worked hard to remove as much traditional plastic packaging as possible. Our solution is home-compostable packaging. Unlike some "degradable" or "compostable" plastics that require specific, high-temperature industrial facilities to break down, our home compostable materials are made from renewable raw materials and break down naturally at low temperatures. Many are even certified to completely break down in marine environments, preventing harm if they accidentally end up there.
While we can't use home compostable materials for absolutely everything yet, we commit to using recycled or recyclable plastic wherever possible and constantly exploring new sustainable solutions as they develop.
